Alhambra Plumbing Services: Match a Leak, Clog or Cold Shower to the Right Fix
Not every plumbing problem has an obvious name. Start with what you see, hear or smell, and the list below points you to the page that explains what to check, what to ask and when the job cannot wait.

Match a symptom to the page and first safe step
Match the symptom on the left to the page and first step on the right. If two rows fit, read the one for the more serious symptom first.
| What you notice | Where to read | First safe step |
|---|---|---|
| Water is cold, lukewarm or leaking from the tank | repairing the tank you have | Check the breaker or pilot, and look under the tank for water |
| The tank is old, rusted or beyond repair | swapping out an old tank | Ask about bracing and the permit before you pick a model |
| You want endless hot water or a smaller footprint | tankless units and descaling | Ask what gas line and venting the swap involves |
| The water bill jumped but nothing looks wet | locating a hidden leak | Read the meter with everything off, then again 15 to 30 minutes later |
| Warm spots on the floor or the sound of running water at night | a leak under the slab | Shut off the main and watch the meter; call before flooring gets pulled |
| A pipe has split or sprayed | a broken supply line | Close the main shutoff first, then call |
| Repeated pinhole leaks or discolored water | replacing the supply lines | Note where each leak happened and the age of the house |
| One drain is slow or clogged | clearing a stubborn clog | Try a plunger on that fixture; if others gurgle, stop and call |
| Drains keep clogging with grease or roots | high-pressure line cleaning | Ask for a camera look before and after |
| Sewage backs up in a tub, floor drain or toilet | a broken or root-filled sewer line | Stop using water and call; do not run more loads |
| You need a fix without trenching the yard | lining a damaged pipe from inside | Ask whether the pipe is a good candidate for a liner |
| The disposal hums, jams or leaks | a failing kitchen disposal | Cut power at the switch and breaker before you reach near it |
| A faucet drips or flow is weak | dripping faucets and tired sinks | Clean the aerator, then check the shutoff valves |
| A toilet runs, rocks or clogs | a running or leaking toilet | Try the dye test in the tank for a silent leak |
| Scale on fixtures and spots on glass | softening and filtering the water | Get the latest water quality report before you buy |
| Water already reached floors, walls or ceilings | drying and cleanup after water damage | Stop the source, photograph, and call the water damage line |
A gas smell is never a plumbing call. Leave the house and contact your gas utility or 911.

Many calls begin as a repair and turn into a larger decision. A water heater that failed at fifteen years old is not the same question as one that failed at three. A drain that clogs once is not the same as a line that clogs every few months.
- Ask the plumber what failed, why it failed and whether the same cause can hit the rest of the system.
- Ask for the repair and the replacement options side by side, with the work each one includes.
- Ask what the repair does not fix, so the next bill does not surprise you.
- If the answer involves digging, opening a wall or cutting a slab, ask for a camera or moisture reading first and for the findings in writing.
Our service pages cover the questions in each of these areas, from when a water heater is worth fixing to sewer line replacement options. Read the page for your problem before the plumber arrives, so the visit is a conversation and not a sales pitch.
Permits and licenses before any of these jobs
California requires a contractor license for jobs of $1,000 or more, labor and materials combined. That limit rose from $500 on January 1, 2025. Look the contractor up with the Contractors State License Board License Check tool at cslb.ca.gov, and confirm the license is active.
The City of Alhambra Building Division lists plumbing permits for piping, re-piping, new or replacement fixtures and devices, and swimming pool equipment. Water heaters are not named on that page. Call the Building Division at the City before a replacement, then ask your plumber who will pull the permit.
Only licensed individuals, or owners who qualify as exempt owner-builders, can pull plumbing permits, according to the City. If a plumber suggests skipping a permit on work that touches the piping, ask for the reason in writing.

Which services are handled on a separate line?
Water damage restoration and cleanup run through a separate water damage line, shown on that service page. Every other service on this site uses (833) 571-0120.
If water is still coming in, stop the source before anything else. Close the main shutoff, then call. Then read the water damage page for what to photograph and what insurers usually ask for.
Not sure which page fits? Call and describe it. You will get a plain read on whether it is urgent or can wait.
Describe the problem to a plumber
Say what you see, how old the house is and when it started. You will leave the call knowing which service applies and what the visit should cover.
