Alhambra Plumbing Questions Answered: What to Do, What to Ask and Who to Call

These answers start with the action to take, then explain why. Where a City rule applies, the answer names the office and its number so you can confirm before you decide.

Rust and moisture at a joint are an early sign, well before water reaches the floor above.

Water is moving right now

Start here if a pipe has split, a fixture is leaking or the meter will not stop. The answers are short so you can act before you call.

What should I do first when a pipe bursts or water is leaking in my Alhambra home?

Shut off the water at the main valve first. Then open the lowest faucet to drain the line, switch off the water heater and photograph the damage for your records. If water is near outlets or the panel, leave the power off and stay out of the area. Then call (833) 571-0120 and say what failed and where the water is going.

Who do I call about a water leak on a weekend?

On the house side of the meter, call a plumber. The City of Alhambra Customer Service Center, 626-570-5061, lists Monday to Thursday hours of 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is closed Friday through Sunday, and its page lists no after-hours line. Close your main shutoff, then call our dispatch line, and the dispatcher confirms your address and availability.

What if I smell gas?

Leave the house at once and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not flip switches, use a lighter or start a car in the garage. A gas smell is not a plumbing call, and nothing in this page replaces the emergency instructions from your gas utility.

What are the signs of a hidden slab leak?

Common signs are a warm spot on the floor, the sound of running water when every fixture is off, a water bill that climbs with no change in use and damp flooring. Not every house sits on a slab, so ask the plumber what is under yours. Shut off the main and watch the meter: if the dial still moves, a leak is somewhere between the meter and the fixtures.

Hot water and the tank

Water heater questions come up when the shower runs cold or the tank starts to leak. These answers cover age and the permit question.

How long does a water heater last?

A tank water heater commonly lasts about 8 to 12 years and a tankless unit about 18 to 25, but those are general ranges, not local findings. Age matters less than signs: rusty hot water, a rumbling tank, a leak at the base or repeated repairs. If the tank itself is leaking, repair will not hold and replacement is the real question.

Does replacing a water heater need a permit in Alhambra?

The City Building Division lists permits for piping, re-piping, new or replacement fixtures and devices, and swimming pool equipment, and it does not name water heaters on that page. Call the Building Division at 626-570-5032 to confirm before a replacement, and ask your plumber who will file it.

The water heater replacement page covers bracing and what a quote should state.

A closet installation leaves little room around the tank, so leaks are easy to miss until the floor is wet.

Drains, toilets and the sewer line

Slow drains and backups raise the question of where the problem sits and who owns the pipe. These answers separate the two.

When is trenchless lining a better fit than digging?

Lining suits a pipe that is cracked or root-damaged but still in line, because the liner goes in from inside with little digging. Digging is the better choice when the pipe has collapsed, sagged or shifted out of line. A camera inspection decides which applies, so ask to see the footage before you choose a method.

How often should drains be professionally cleaned?

No single interval fits every home. Clean a drain when it slows or gurgles, and ask for a camera look if the same drain clogs again. Homes with large trees nearby or older pipe may need attention sooner, and the footage shows whether roots or buildup are the cause.

Why does my toilet run on its own?

Most often the flapper at the bottom of the tank is not sealing, or the fill valve is not shutting off. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait fifteen minutes without flushing. If color shows in the bowl, the flapper is leaking and a replacement part usually fixes it.

Who is responsible for the sewer line to the street?

The property owner is responsible for the lateral from the building to the City main. The City of Alhambra 2025 sewer system management plan says the City does not own or operate any portion of private sewer laterals. A problem in the City main is different, and Public Works at 626-570-5067 handles reports about it.

Permits, licenses and who does the work

These questions decide who is allowed to do a job and how to check. The answers rely on the City and the state licensing board.

How do I check that a plumber is licensed in California?

Use the License Check tool at cslb.ca.gov, which is run by the Contractors State License Board. Search by name or license number and confirm the license is active and in the right classification. The check takes a minute and is worth doing before any job that involves piping.

Do I need a licensed contractor for a small plumbing job?

California requires a contractor license for jobs of $1,000 or more, labor and materials together. That threshold rose from $500 on January 1, 2025. Under that amount the license rule generally does not apply, but permit rules can still apply to piping, so ask the City either way.

Who can pull a plumbing permit in Alhambra?

According to the City Building Division, only licensed individuals or owners who qualify as exempt owner-builders can pull plumbing permits. Ask your plumber whether they will file and attend the inspection, and keep the permit with your house records. The Building Division is at 626-570-5032.

What happens on a call

People often wonder who answers and what comes next. This answer describes it plainly.

What happens when I call?

A call reaches the same dispatch line as every Alhambra call, and the dispatcher confirms your address and availability before sending anyone. Have the street address, what failed and when it started ready. Ask what the visit should cover and how the price is set before you agree to it.

Still have a question?

Call and describe what you see. You will hear what to check first and what the visit should cover.
